The kitchen is one of my all time favourite rooms in the house. Not only because I absolutely adore cooking, but because it is the one room that will never fail at bringing everyone together. Really, it is the space that sets the tone for the entire house.
There will always be timeless elements within interior design that won’t ever go out of style. Although, each and every year you will notice new and exciting design trends that may last, or go out of style as quickly as they became popular.
There are some stunningly SWOON WORTHY trends in kitchen design that we are seeing for 2021 and today I am sharing 8 of my favourites!
I will be sharing my thoughts on each of these design trends… so get cozy with a coffee and keep on reading if you are interested in finding out what they are!!
NATURAL WOOD ACCENTS
Natural wood accents have been popping up all over in kitchen design lately and I am definitely not mad about it!
Honestly, I normally almost always shy away from wood cabinets and usually gravitate to clean whites or lovely pops of colour. I will be the first to say, this year has opened my mind and I am fully embracing natural wood accents!!
We are seeing these wood accents highlighted not only on the floor boards, but in trim detailing and cabinetry. The natural wood grain pairs beautifully in combination with subtle coloured cabinets and the always timeless, classic white cabinet.
A LITTLE POP OF COLOUR
Coloured cabinets have been in style for a while now, but they aren’t going away anytime soon! Honestly, who doesn’t love a good pop of colour anyway!?
It doesn’t have to be vibrant and overwhelming. Colour can be muted and subtle as well. You can really utilize colour in so many ways through cabinetry, kitchen backsplash material, trim detailing and different tiling techniques!
This year we are still continuing to see a lot of blue tones on kitchen cabinetry and now a lot of green tones as well… how perfect, my two all time favourite colours!
STREAMLINE KITCHEN CABINETS
Another trend that we are seeing a lot of this year is the minimal and streamline look of kitchen cabinets that have little to no hardware. This is a very modern style, showcasing clean lines and sleek technology. Perfect for someone who doesn’t like clutter or anything too flashy!
I am actually really into this trend because it makes a statement, even though it is very simple!
SOFT CURVES AND ROUNDED DETAILS
We are seeing pretty, rounded details becoming the most beautiful trend for 2021, and for good reason! Although this trend has been used in design for a few years now, it is getting more and more popular as we speak!
I am so, sooo in love with this trend! Not only are we seeing it in soft furnishings like cozy rounded reading chairs, but we are also seeing it a lot in doorways and trim to add character.
When it comes to interior design this year, storage solutions have become a focus all throughout the house, especially in the kitchen in particular. We are seeing floor to ceiling built-ins, multi-functional spaces and walk in pantries popping up in kitchens everywhere! You will notice soft curves and beautiful rounded edges are being utilized in different ways to make these areas more interesting and delicate.
SLAB BACKSPLASH
If you love a kitchen backsplash that makes a statement, then chances are you will love this gorgeous slab backsplash trend that is becoming increasingly popular this year!
These backsplash materials are made to appear as one piece that effortlessly flows from one edge of the wall to the other. It creates drama, while still looking sleek and luxurious.
We are seeing a TON of marble, or marble-like materials in kitchen design this year. Honestly, marble is not a very user friendly material, so engineered products such as quartz, quartzite and porcelain are taking centre stage. I am a huge fan of quartz and porcelain, so this trend makes me very happy! (Check out my blog post where I go into detail about all of these materials if you are interested in learning more!)
Marbled quartz is a beautiful material that has been making its debut in kitchens everywhere lately. Not only is it used as countertops and pretty waterfall detailing, but it is also being utilized when it comes to the kitchen backsplash, giving you this stunning new trend!
EYE-CATCHING VENT HOODS
Not only are vent hoods functional, but they can also be super trendy and make a statement visually!
I am really loving this design trend this year because eye-catching vent hoods make each individual kitchen stand out with their own unique character!
Lately, we have been seeing some fantastic styles in kitchen design! Some vent hoods have a farmhouse rustic vibe, while others are sleek and modern. Honestly, any style can be utilized through a fabulous vent hood!
OPEN SHELVING
Open shelving units have been popping up in kitchen design a lot over the past few years. We seem to be seeing it even more and more in 2021.
This trend allows you to show off any pretty kitchenware, ceramics or greenery to showcase your unique flare!
I really love the look of this trend because I am all about showcasing a pretty home decor moment! Although, I do have to say for me personally, I don’t find this trend super practical. It leaves me a little conflicted because it does look super pretty when styled, but I find it can take away from needed storage and in some cases can be more difficult to keep properly cleaned, as it is exposed to the cooking environment.
Overall, I think this trend is GORGEOUS to look at, but maybe isn’t the most practical… at least me for anyways.
GOLD FIXTURES
I know what you’re thinking… and yes gold is still a thing!
Gold has been around for a long time, although brass seemed to be all the rage the last few years. We have now moved on from brass and towards more of a true gold tone. We are seeing it all over kitchen designs within the light fixtures, hardware and faucets.
I love that this pretty gold trend literally goes with anything… from dark, moody kitchen designs, to clean, white kitchens and even fun, colourful designs!
