Let’s cozy up with some Easy and Delicious Mulled Wine
I always associate Mulled Wine with the holidays, although you could enjoy it anytime of the year. Warm, comforting and delicious… perfect for the cooler winter months. Not to mention, it is extremely EASY to make and will fill your home with the best holiday fragrance.
My Easy and Delicious Mulled Wine recipe comes together with 3 simple ingredients in about 15 minutes. Perfectly fruity with the comforting flavours of mulling spices and a touch of apple.
How to select the best ingredients for mulled wine…
First things first… let’s start with the WINE
Red wine is the base for this recipe… I’m sure you could have guessed that 😉
I recommend picking up a mid-range bottle of red. It should be a bottle that you would enjoy drinking on its own… but definitely not anything too fancy as you will be jazzing it up with lots of delicious spices.
You want to select a wine that is preferably full bodied with flavours of dark fruits as they will compliment the mulling spices quite nicely. Zinfandel, Merlot and certain Cabernet Sauvignons are the best varietals in my opinion.
You want to avoid wines that are oaky and quite dry, as well as wines that are too light bodied such as Pinot Noir. The delicate flavours of a Pinot Noir don’t carry enough body to hold up to the mulling spices.
Now let’s add some flavour with MULLING SPICES
Mulling spices make this drink so delicious and comforting. Traditionally you will find spices such as cinnamon, cloves, star anise, cardamon and sometimes even allspice. These spices are left whole and infuse the red wine with so much flavour!
You can find mulling spices that are ready to go at local markets and grocery stores around the holidays, or you can choose to combine the spices yourself to create a homemade mulling spice blend.
Lastly… add a touch of SWEETNESS to round out all of the flavours
For my Mulled Wine recipe, I use apple juice as the sweetener. It adds the perfect hint of flavour without overpowering or over sweetening the recipe.
Alternatively, you can choose to replace the apple juice with some spiced apple cider… or use a combination of the two.
Easy and Delicious Mulled Wine
Ingredients:
1 750ml bottle of red wine (zinfandel works the best)
2 cups of apple juice
8 tsp mulling spice
2 looseleaf drawstring bags
Method
Add 4 tsp of mulling spice into each looseleaf drawstring bag. Tighten the drawstring and tie to create two sealed mulling spice packets.
In a saucepan, add a bottle of red wine, the apple juice and two packets of mulling spice.
Warm over medium heat until it begins to simmer. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10-15 minutes.
Garnish with an orange wheel and a cinnamon stick if you like. Serve hot and enjoy!!
Cheers!
