Consider these 6 tips to help guide you into creating your own Cozy Coastal Retreat!
I have always been in love with the calming and cozy feel that you get from Coastal Interior Design. With Coastal Inspired Retreats popping up more and more in interior design lately, I have been so inspired and totally living for it!
There are many versions of Coastal Design, but the principles always stay the same… a reflection of the coast through crisp whites, an array of blue hues, natural woods and organic fibers that work together to create a minimal and fresh take on a cozy ocean beach house.

Stay Classic with Neutrals & Crisp Whites
Coastal Interior Design should feel serene and calming. Neutral colour palettes and crisp whites will do just that! Honestly, you just can’t beat the classics!
A neutral colour palette will act as the perfect backdrop for any unique design elements that you want to stand out as a focal point within your space.
Incorporate Natural Elements
Natural elements, such as white washed woods, ceiling beams and even unique furniture pieces such as these gorgeous log side tables above will really bring forward a coastal feel!
Consider incorporating different colours and textures… like a natural wood mantle in contrast with a white shiplap wall feature like pictured above. I also love including woven area rugs, organic baskets and flowy linens.
Add Character with Colours of the Coast
Organic colours that reflect the ocean will make your home feel relaxed and almost carefree.
You honestly can’t go wrong with soft blues, creamy whites, sandy wood tones and deep ocean blues! These colours will go with almost anything so your home decor will feel cohesive and of course, visually appealing.
Say Yes to Slipcovers
I know what you may be thinking… and yes slipcovers are totally found at your grandmas house. BUT they can also be super fab and current!
Natural textiles like cotton and linens will add warmth and bring a beachy vibe to your space when fitted over furniture such as couches, cozy reading chairs and even dining chairs. Slipcovers can be unexpected and unique. They bring the perfect balance between modern and traditional with a coastal feel!
Embrace Open & Airy Spaces
Just like the ocean, you want your space to have that open and airy feel that you get on the beach!
Allow your furniture and decor to have space to breathe and stand out. Try to avoid going “over board” with excessive nautical items such as ropes, anchors, seashells and signs. A minimal approach will allow each feature in your home to stand out without being overshadowed by too many design elements.
This will help your home to feel relaxing, creating the perfect place to decompress and unwind after a busy day.
Add Texture with Wall Treatments
The walls don’t always have to be “painted” or “wallpapered”… you can get creative with textured panelling and even shiplap! The best part is, there are so many ready made options available now that are much more cost effective than they have been in the past.
Wall treatments add dimension and bring character to your space. They can be painted in a bold colour to create more of a dramatic feature, or you can choose to keep it neutral for a clean, modern look. It’s really up to you!
